What is DEFRA's Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) mandate?
DWT is a UK Government service that replaces paper-based waste transfer notes and consignment notes with a fully digital, end-to-end tracking system. Every movement of controlled waste requires a unique digital record shared across the entire chain — from producer to carrier to final treatment facility.
When does Digital Waste Tracking become mandatory?
Following a public beta opening on 28 April 2026, digital tracking becomes mandatory for waste receiving sites in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1 October 2026, and in Scotland from January 2027. Waste carriers, brokers and dealers follow in Phase 2, becoming mandatory from October 2027.
